March Update

Well it’s been a crazy month. I managed to injure myself not once, or twice but there times in the same arm. I know, I’m an idiot. I should have learnt after the first one to slow down. So, I finally slowed down and took the little spare time I have to rest up and recover. However, this is what has led to my inactivity and I’m determined to get back on the horse from next week.

My pledge for my recovery time is a weekly update and a flash fiction piece.

Updates will continue to be on a Sunday. I also what to share with you my favourite reading from the week.

Today, I started The Grim Collection and I have to say, I’ve fallen for the book already and constantly look forward to any opportunity to escape for five minutes.

Week Three and Four

First of all, let me apologise for the late post. I got married this week and although the posts were ready I literally couldn’t find five minutes to set them up for publishing.

Despite a busy week, with family demanding my attention, I manage to write a few pieces with my little man the old fashion way.

So with 1178 words and a million photos taken, that I’m still working my way through. So think week I’ve read the following:

On writing- Stephen King. A lovely read with some good pointers. For me personally I found it more inspirational than informative.

Lots of short stories and flash fiction, which I annoying didn’t make note off.

My pic of the week is the view from my window, the morning after my wedding. It’s nothing special but it’s a reminder of the stillness I felt that morning.

Back to normal this week so lots of posts coming your way!

For Grandad

As we look back over timeWe find ourselves wondering …..

Did we remember to thank you enough

For all you have done for us?

For all the times you were by our sides

To help and support us …..
To celebrate our successes

To understand our problems

And accept our defeats?

Or for teaching us by your example,

The value of hard work, good judgment,

Courage and integrity?
We wonder if we ever thanked you

For the sacrifices you made.

To let us have the very best?

And for the simple things

Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?
If we have forgotten to show our

Gratitude enough for all the things you did,

We’re thanking you now.

And we are hoping you knew all along,

How much you meant to us.

Why reading is so important as a writer!

So I ordered and started reading Stephen Kings ‘On Writing’. It was recommended as a must read. On first impressions, I was confused why a book needs three forewords.

First Foreword-

Even Stephen King had doubts about his ability to write. We all start at the beginning and the only way forward it to write.

Second Foreword- to learn elements of style.(added to list of books to read)

Third Foreword- A simple thank you

It’s interesting how is calls the next section his CV. It’s made up of broken memories of how he came to the craft.

So far the biggest thing I’ve learn is confirmation that all writers doubt their abilities and worth and that I don’t need to follow any of the rules other than be true to myself.

I haven’t finished the book yet but I will update this post once I’ve finished reading the whole book.

Have you read this book? What did you take away from it? Is there any other books you think are a must read for any aspiring writers out there? Leave a comment below I’d love to hear from you.

Week two update

This week took an interesting turn. I managed the photography easily, after just two simple short shoots, and some experimenting. However, the writing was a little bit more unpredictable. I managed 2983 Words which is great but, in my opinion more importantly, I edited and read more this week. Having started to read more about writing, I’ve decided that a small about of great words continues to be better than a large quantity. I know this sounds obvious, quality over quantity but I didn’t realise at first how much editing my work could improve it, until I edited a piece 4 times and now I love it.

I do now!

So as I know I have a very challenging week personally ahead of myself, this week (I’m getting married). I have decided to challenge myself to just one photo and one piece of writing, but I have to publish it here for you all to see. No hiding next week from anyone.
